2023 - An Update on Progress and Recent Endeavors

This blog has not been updated for a while but we wish to assure you that StrimlingLab, the research group behind, AIFutures is far from idle. As we continue our exploration of AI, we want to take this opportunity and provide you with a small glimpse into our recent undertakings by highlighting three of the papers that we've published in 2023 on quite diverse aspects of AI.

If you can't access the full-text version but want it, don't hesitate to reach out.

1) Examining Political Ideologies of American Tech Workers
Niels Selling and Pontus Strimling

The realm of technology transcends mere algorithms and coding; it has profoundly impacted our lives and has gained great economic and political influence. In this paper we have probed the ideological underpinnings of American tech workers, unveiling a unique combination of left-wing and anti-establishment attitudes and a substantial ideological divide between tech workers and their leaders.

2) Global variations in online privacy concerns across 57 countries
Emma Engström, Kimmo Eriksson, Marie Björnstjerna, Pontus Strimling

Cross-cultural studies reveal that people's worry about online privacy differs worldwide. But what's behind this divergence? We have used data from over 18000 adults across 57 different countries to shed light on the drivers behind this phenomenon. We find that norms favoring guarded online sharing were weaker in countries with high internet penetration. Does this mean familiarity with the digital world makes us less wary of its shadows?

3) The Future of Work: Augmentation or Stunting?
Markus Furendal and Karim Jebari

In the confluence of AI advancement and the evolution of labor, we ponder a critical question – Is AI an augmentation that elevates human capabilities or a catalyst for stagnation? Our analysis in this article complements and contributes to the emerging literature on the impact of increasingly complex technology on the quality of or access to meaningful work.

Should these glimpses into our current work interest you, we invite you to engage with us further. Several of the team's members are open to interviews, participating in panels, academic collaborations, and more, so don't hesitate to reach out.

Finally, we will be looking to expand our research group during the fall of 2023 with one research assistant and at least one post-doc, so keep an attentive eye for forthcoming opportunities to contribute to our shared odyssey of knowledge acquisition.

Warm regards,

StrimlingLab
